Needs of School

As the school is newly established, though equipped by many facilities we are facing the following challenges

  • School
  • Bus:  As we have students from all over the area, we have one small bus, not enough to carry all the students. We have to make two trips, some of the students reach school too early and some reach school very late. Even then the bus is overload; therefore some children do not take the bus because of the dangers. It is one of the reason that student don’t prefer the school.
  • Hostel: Students from all over Chitral after their selection are worried because we have only one hostel with limited seats. Some students have to rent houses and again parents are not satisfied because of the lack of their security.
  • Expensive: Our school is the top choice in our area but it is quite expensive. Even after their selection students are deprived of the opportunity to attend school due to financial problem.
  • Teachers: Qualified teachers are leaving the school because their salaries do not adequately compensate for the amount of work that they complete.
  • Less applicant: due to the mentioned problem few students are applying  for admission, we have to fill the seats at any cost, in this way we are taking low scored student which not makes  the class room environment not smooth.

  • NON SIBI REFLECTION

  • Living for others is the real humanity. Helping others gives an internal joy. Being a human being always we are try to give internal joy.  We can do little things like carry someone stuff, guide someone, etc.
My non sibi contribution is as an educator. As a teacher personally every day after school I ask my students to visit me if there is any confusion or if they cannot ask questions in front of the whole class. Often my students come to me with their problems and we are discussing them for hours. Though it is not my job description but it gives me the internal joy that nothing can compensate it.  Even after school at home I ask my student to visit me any time to discuss their problems. During my summer and winter vacations my room will be full of the students who need help in their studies.
Apart from these activities, I have worked for the local education board where we were researching for the needy students for financial support and then forwarding that information to the responsible organization.
Along with my other colleagues we were conducting sessions for career counseling and also providing participants CDs and booklets. Through my little efforts I have tried to help humanity and will continue to in the future.

Max Warburg Courage Curriculum
On 11 July 2012 we had a trip to Boston where in Northeastern Alumni Centre we had a very informative, formal and informal presentation. In her formal presentation Ms. Elizabeth Evan told the whole story of Max and Max curriculum. The screen was appealing for courage in 25 different languages.
The interesting points in her presentation were.
The partnership with schools and learning communities across the global to engage student in the reading and writing process.
Max himself a very courageous child who was fighting with Leukemia with smiling face.
Their goals to engage student especially urban children to make connection with literature.
Inspiring participants to celebrate acts of moral courage in their own lives and in the lives of other in their communities.
Engaging teacher in understanding of their students’ interest.
Friends, teachers and max mom described the characteristics of Max as kind brave, helpful and caring kid.
Very emotional scenes of Max life in hospital.
Essay writing was very diverse and attractive for the students from all over the world.
In Courage essay through creative writing improvement of reading, writing and thinking skills.
Max story was inspiring and definitely role model for the world.
Multi language culture in the curriculum.
Informal presentation
We met different personalities there including Max mother friends curriculum designer etc. We exchanged our views about our visit to USA, that what was our purpose of visit and we had learnt so far. We shared about our culture, our schools and our country. We also interacted with the MAP evaluator who explains the process to report back to US department.  We also received some important gifts from the organization. We collected a lot of ideas from Max. We will implement some of the ideas back to our school, starting from essay writing.

Washington D.C. Reflection
It was a fantastic visit there. We reached DC at 1 o’clock at Hampton Inn.  The Hotel was very neat and comfortable. After putting our bags in our rooms we went for lunch in Kabab palace for tasty foods. After having some rest we started our tour of Washington.  We enjoyed the beauty of the city through the trolley and the interesting guide.  He explained everything told brief history of every monument and memorial.  We came across many important buildings like the State Department, museums, institutes etc. We visited the back side of the White House which was one of our wishes to be there.  We took picture and enjoyed it a lot. The difference we felt here was in our country every one cannot visit the residential area of the President or Prime Minister.  Here there was rush of the public including the tourists.  Outside the State Department we took pictures with Albert Einstein’s wonderful statue which is made up of bronze giving Einstein a shiny nose. Then we visited the statue of Martin Luther King and came to know his great contribution to improve civil life. This was his global contribution toward humanity and is appreciable. Other memorials visited by us were Lincolns’ memorial and the Vietnam memorial. We realized the contribution of soldiers for their country and appreciation of their sacrifices by the government and by the artists.  In the evening we enjoyed the delighting sight of Washington City and Moon light monuments in our return to the Hotel. The next day we had a meeting and certificate ceremony in State Department. We met impressive personalities like Susun Domowitz , Bureau of Education and Culture Affairs.   We were excited to meet her. We met Mr. Shahid Aman Ullah, Representative of Muslim Communities.  He shared the contribution of his organization for the empowerment of the youth and his chapters contributing in education and other fields of life.  Other educator also shared their contributions and challenges in education. We also shared our learning from our visit. After that we had experience of metro travel to Smithsonian.  There were a lot of museums there. Due to time shortage we were able to visit only two. The famous air and space museum and Sculpture Garden. In Air and Spaces Museum we has a very close observation on the planes, spaceships, satellites,  and all the modern air shipping technologies under a single roof. After having some rest we were invited by Muslims Community for Aftar.  It was very nice to hear that Muslims here are working to show the real image of Islam and working to convey the Message of Islam which is very important for making good relation with other faiths. The next day again we had a very busy day.  Some of the group had a meeting with Senators. Our group had a very important visit of the Capitol building. It was full of the exciting statues and memorials. We visited every corner of the building including George Washington’s Tomb and Washington Centre.  After having our launch we left for Pakistan Embassy, a home away from home. We met different diplomats who share their contribution to improve Pak US relationship and the challenges they are facing. The highlighted the importance of Pak US relations also appreciated the contribution of US government for Pakistan. In the evening we went to Pentagon city for fun and some shopping too.On the 25th of July we checked out from the Hotel and went to Voice of America. It was very exciting to be there, a place voices from every part of the world reach out. The staff members facilitated to teach us the procedure of networking and broadcasting. The most important thing about VOA is that they focus on the reality of the news regardless of how slow or how fast they are broadcasting. Our voice was also included though some of our friends in Urdu and Pashtu languages.  After that we left for The Post Office. We had a very beautiful view of the city from the top of the building. Took lunch and left for Boston. We had so much fun that we persuaded ourselves very hardly to come bacOur visit was full of exposure, full of fun and was very very important. We received a lot there that was beyond our expectations.

    Student Engagement

    Introduction
Teaching-learning process is the heart of education. On it depends the fulfillment of the aims & objectives of education. It is the most powerful instrument of education to bring about desired changes in the students. Teaching learning are related terms. In teaching - learning process, the teacher, the learner, the curriculum& other variables are organized in a systematic way to attain some predetermine goals.
Effective teachers pose compelling questions, explain options, teach us to reason, suggest possible directions, and urge us on. The best teachers, like the best leaders, have an uncanny ability to step outside themselves and become liberating forces in our lives.
There are different issues in teaching learning process to think over them. Most of the teachers are able to define a set of ideas, a theme or a particular event they say the genuinely understood not know about. It is toward such understanding that all the teaching should be aimed towards something student can hold on to beyond the Friday test, the final exam and school itself.
The most important and persisting issue for the student and teacher is the disengagement of the student in the class. The disengaged students disrupt classes, skip them or fail to complete assignments. Typically the disengaged students behave well in the schools. They attend classes and complete the work but with little indication of excitement and commitment. In contract engaged students make a psychological investment in learning. They take pride not only to improve their grades but also in understanding the material and internalizing them in their lives.
For teacher the challenge is how to get the student to do academic work serious enough to learn. For the student s the challenge is how to cope with teacher demands so that to avoid boredom, to maintain self-respect and to succeed in the school.
    Definition
Engagement stands for active involvement, commitment and concentrated attention in contract to superficial participation or lack of interest. In daily life activities there is various level of engagement as we talk, observe, read, reflect and use of our bodies.

    Engagement in academic work
“We define student engagement in academic work as the student psychological investment learning  and efforts directed towards learning, understanding and mastering the knowledge, skill or craft that academic work is intended to promote.”
Academic work consist of task, usually assigned by the teacher that students are asked to complete in order to master the knowledge, skill and craft that serve as the instruction objectives of schooling. The work can occur as part of classroom instruction, homework or exam and it may include different tupes of reading writing computing participation in the discussion and individual and group project.
    Importance of student engagement
Engaging students is important not only because it enhances the student experience but also because students who are committed to their own learning are inclined to actively participate in lifelong learning opportunities after graduation. This benefits the individual by enriching their personal lives as they continue to use the tools and skills they have acquired and refined at university.
The institution that is actively involved in student engagement takes a student centered approach in the design, development and delivery of its courses; inspires its staff to involve students at every level possible, and invites student feedback and input to the learning experience and environment.
     Factors affecting engagement
There are different factor effecting student engagement in the class. Some of them are
    1. Students, personal and social background
    2. The district and community context, whose norms and policies affect many aspect of life in the school.
    3. School culture, reflected in beliefs and values of staff and students
    4. School organization(size, structure ,division of labor)
    5. The curriculum
    6. Teacher background and competence
    7. Teacher student interaction, in and out of class
    8. Appreciation both for the teachers and for the students
These and other factors can both enhance and diminish membership and authentic work well intended teacher s, unaware of how students social background affect their approach to schooling, may misinterpret their behavior. Organization routines and curriculum mandates can reduce the possibilities for authentic academic work
Our learning to overcome this challenge:
During our summer institute we interacted with different teachers who share their precious experiences to overcome this challenge. The activities learnt here can be modified and implemented according the topic we are going to teach in our classes. Some of the activities I have included in my MAP. Now we are in a better condition to engage our student more affectively in academic works.

  1. Dear Khadija! Before addressing the issue of water pollution and finding remedies through various activities in school/class room, you need to introduce the concept of environment, its components, ecosystem, biodiversity and then various types of pollutants that are adding hazardous components in our natural and man made environmental ecosystems.
You may arrange a one-day workshop for teachers who can, in turn, impart the same information to the students through short lectures or informal assembly addresses. A Nature Club may fulfill the task effectively however, you will be needing to learn how to establish a Nature Club?
